ASM Scientific Writing and Publishing Institute Applications

 

 

Eligibility

Individuals eligible to apply must:

  • Be a senior-level graduate students and early-career postdoctoral scientists

  • Be an ASM student, transitional or full member

  • Have prepared a draft version of a first-author manuscript in the microbiological sciences

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be selected based upon three criteria:

  • Prior experience. The proposed training is aimed at individuals who are seeking this experience for the first time.

  • Academic preparation.  Applicants must demonstrate that they have successfully achieved senior level graduate education (passed qualifying exams) and are academically prepared to benefit from this introductory training.

  • Research experience. Applicants must demonstrate that they have a research project that has been approved by their research mentor, have conducted 50-100% of the experiments  needed to write a publication, and are at an optimal phase to write a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal (generally 2-9 months before anticipated manuscript submission).


Participants will be chosen with the goal of bringing together a broad range of experiences and career goals to the Institute. For example, every effort will be made to select participants representing scientific, geographic, and racial and ethnic diversity.

Preparing the Application Packet

A complete application packet includes the following materials:

  1. Applicant Cover Page (submit online). You must click the SUBMIT button to submit the cover page. MAC users must download Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to submit cover page.
  2. Curriculum Vitae. Listing your educational and research experiences and any publications, presentations or awards that you may have received. Please limit to 2 pages.
  3. Title, list of authors, institute affiliations, key words and short abstract of research for your first-author manuscript. If you have thoughts about where you would like to submit your manuscript, indicate this information.  
  4. Summary of your goals and expectations for participating in the ASM Scientific Writing and Publishing Institute.
  5. Advisor Approval Page (download form).

Submitting the Application

Application materials 1 - 4 must be submitted electronically as attached documents to asmgap@asmusa.org with the following subject line: ASMGAP Scientific Publishing Institute [insert applicant name here]. The Advisor Approval Page must be sent from the advior to asmgap@asmusa.org or faxed to (202) 403-3513. Complete applications are due on or before Sunday, November 15, 2009.

Final Notification

Applicants will be notified by e-mail on or by December 15, 2009 about the final status of the selection process.
