ASM Presentation Skills Institute Application

 

 

Application Deadline is Monday, March 15, 2010!

Eligibility

All applicants must satisfy the following three criteria:

  • ASM student member
  • Graduate student conducting research in microbiology
  • Actively pursuing MS, Ph.D. or professional degree

Institute is more suitable for early doctoral graduate students and masters level graduate students. However, all graduate students are welcome to apply.

To apply for the Institute, one must be an ASM student, transitional or full member. If you wish to join ASM, the membership form can be printed from the ASM website or requested by contacting membership@asmusa.org.

Application Packet

When preparing your application packet, start by completing the Applicant Cover Page by clicking on the link below. All fields are required except for middle initial and research advisor's name. You must click the SUBMIT button at the bottom of the page to complete the cover page. Attach cover page to the supporting documents and essays, make six copies of the entire packet, and mail in one package to ASM Presentation Institute, American Society for Microbiology, Education Dept., 1752 N Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036. The complete application must be received by March 15, 2010.

Please type your responses, using single-spaced line format and 12-pitch type font. In the upper right-hand corner of each page, write the page number, beginning with Page 1 for the Applicant Cover Page and ending with Page 8 for the Adviser's Approval Page. Download the Applicant's Cover Page and Advisor's Approval Page below.

  • Applicant cover page (pdf). You must click the SUBMIT button at the bottom of the cover page. MAC users must download Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to submit cover page. (page 1)
  • Curriculum vitae listing your educational and research experiences and any publications, presentations or awards that you may have received. (pages 2-3)
  • Describe your research project, including the focus of your research. (page 4)
  • List all conferences/meetings where you presented your research within the past five years. Please include the month and year of each conference/meeting. (page 5)
  • List any conference/meetings you are planning to present your research within the next twelve months. (page 6)
  • Briefly summarize your goals and expectations for participating in the ASM Presentation Skills Institute. (page 7)
  • Adviser's approval page (pdf). (page 8)

Applicants must provide a letter of recommendation from their current advisor. The letter should address: 1) The nature of the applicant's work and his/her role in the research, 2) Applicant's potential as a researcher, and 3) Applicant's participation in research seminars and career interest. The original letter must be sealed in an envelope and signed by the individual on the back flap. Be sure to include the applicant's name on the front side. Please enclose this sealed envelope with your application packet. Only one sealed recommendation letter is needed for the application packet.

Please prepare six (6) copies of the entire application packet. Only one sealed recommendation letter is needed. Complete packets are due at ASM by Monday, March 15, 2010. Incomplete applications will be returned for more information and could delay processing.

Criteria for Selection

Participants will be chosen with the goal of bringing a broad range of experiences and career goals to the Institute. For example, every effort will be made to select participants representing scientific, geographic, and racial and ethnic diversity.

Final Notification

Applicants will be notified by e-mail about the final status of the selection process.
