ASM Presentation Institute Highlights

Institute Overview
The ASM seeks applications from early doctoral graduate students and masters-level graduate students for the 2010 ASM Presentation Institute on May 22 - 23 in San Diego, California.

Goal

The goal of this two day workshop is to develop the skills needed to make a successful presentation at a scientific meeting and interact in a professional manner with colleagues. Emphasis will be on 3- and 10-minute oral presentations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Able to professionally introduce self in one-on-one and small group interactions that occur in a variety of situations at a national meeting.
  • Able to make an oral presentation in ones scientific area
  • Able to provide a good title for an abstract
  • Understand essentials of writing a good abstract
  • Understand essential of preparing a good poster
  • Understand ethical issues about authorship, presentations at multiple meetings
  • Understand professional dress, language, and behavior

Training Format

Two day program with didactic training, small and individual group work, and pre-assignments.

Affirmation and Acceptance

Upon acceptance into the Institute, participants will be required to:

  • Pay the registration fee and make their own housing and travel arrangements. (refer to section on housing and registration)
  • Prepare a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation of research activities
  • Prepare an abstract and title (submit 1 month prior to the Institute)
  • Stay the entire duration of the Institute
  • Bring a laptop computer to use during the Institute
  • Participate in a follow-up survey to assess program

Sponsorship and Credentials
The ASM Presentation Skills Institute is sponsored by the ASM Committee on Minority Education. The ASM Education Board is a recipient of the 2000 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mentoring in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education. The Board was recognized by President Clinton for its contribution to graduate education.
